[Column] Grind Orchestra — A group of sounds that transcend boundaries and their structure

Introduction — What the name says

Text: mmr|Theme: Experimental hardcore group structure and recording expanded around improvisation and noise

The name Grind Orchestra sums up the nature of the music. “Grind” means friction or crushing, and “Orchestra” means music as a collective. The combination of these two words refers not just to a band, but to the field itself, which is created by the collision and accumulation of sounds.

Formed in 1995 by former Boredoms member Toyohito Yoshikawa, this project began its activities by crossing the boundaries of hardcore, noise, and improvisational music.

Although they have a typical band structure, in reality they are more like an experiment that generates the collision and development of sounds in real time, rather than a group that performs fixed songs.

Grind Orchestra is a sonic collective that combines the impulse of hardcore with the freedom of improvisation.

Formation and background — Derived from Kansai Alternative

In the 1990s, the Kansai alternative scene attracted worldwide attention. Toyohito Yoshikawa, who was a member of Boredoms and was at the center of this, was delivering powerful performances as a frontman with Yamatsuka EYE.

In 1994, around the time of his departure, he started a new group called Grind Orchestra.

From its inception, its composition was extremely unique. With a total of four percussionists, theremin and electronics, the band deviated from the traditional concept of a band.

What this arrangement created was a surging beat and Japanese vocals in which meaning and sound are intertwined in multiple layers. It wasn”t just noise or hardcore, it was a strange pop world that didn”t exist anywhere else.

Grind Orchestra created a unique pop structure through an unusual arrangement.

Members — the intersection of fixed and floating

Although Grind Orchestra was fluid, the following eight members were the main core members.

・Ago ・Gaku Terauchi ・Koichi Nakaya ・Mitsuhiro Yoshida ・Nana Lala Fafafa ・Toyohito Yoshikawa ・Tsutomu Motoyama ・Yojiro Tatekawa

The multiple percussion system, which was an early feature, created a ““layered” rather than a ““division of labor” in rhythm. Rather than synchronizing individual rhythms, they coexist with gaps and collisions, forming a gigantic mass of beats.

The addition of theremin and electronic sounds gives the space a sense of spaciousness and a different kind of acoustics.

Initial organization structure

This arrangement itself determined the direction of the music.

Grind Orchestra is a group whose orchestration itself functions as a musical structure.

Musicality — raging beats and multidimensional vocals

The musical core of Grind Orchestra lies in its overwhelming rhythmic movement and vocals that almost deconstruct language.

The beat created by multiple percussions is not just a rhythm, but is perceived as a undulation or mass. The Japanese vocals that overlap this play a more acoustic role than conveying meaning, and resonate in a multidimensional manner.

What this combination creates is a chaotic yet somehow catchy feeling, a ““distorted pop feel’’ so to speak.

After 1999, this pop style was further expanded with the addition of melodic instruments such as guitar and bass. The fragmentary structure now takes on new contours, and the sound development becomes more diverse.

Musical evolution

This change was not simply an increase in the number of notes, but an expansion of the dimension of music itself.

Grind Orchestra redefined the concept of pop with beats and voices at its core.

Although it was a short period of time, it is clear that he has made a huge leap forward musically.

Grind Orchestra is an experimental music project that has undergone rapid evolution in a short period of time.

Impact and positioning

Grind Orchestra occupies a unique position in Japan’s hardcore/noise scene.

While following the flow of Kansai Alternative, they went beyond that framework and restructured the organization, structure, and language.

In particular, his approach, which centered on rhythm and voice, had a major influence on the experimental music that followed.

Grind Orchestra is an entity that has redesigned the very structure of music.

Conclusion — pop that deviates from structure

Grind Orchestra is a rare project that is based on the impulse of hardcore and the texture of noise, but also finds an unusual pop quality in it.

Physical beats with multiple percussion, vocals that transcend meaning, and melodic elements introduced in the later stages. By mixing these together, music like no other was formed.

It is music that exists as a phenomenon, not a genre.

Grind Orchestra created a new kind of pop by deviating from structure.
