Anticon (anticon.) is an American indie/experimental hip-hop label/collective that was founded in 1998. While many of the founding members expanded their activities into “avant-garde hip-hop” and indie/electronica, crossing over between solo acts and derivative units, the label’s activities declined in the late 2010s after significant changes (departure of a co-founder, death of a member, etc.).

History and spirit — origins as “anti”

Anticonは1998年、Sole（Tim Holland） や Doseone（Adam Drucker）、Jel（Jeffrey Logan）、Odd Nosdam（David Madson）、Pedestrian（James Brandon Best）、Yoni Wolf（Why?） らを中心に立ち上がった。
The name comes from the word “ant-icon”, symbolizing resistance to established genres and commercial norms.

代表的なプロジェクトには cLOUDDEAD、Themselves、Subtle、Deep Puddle Dynamics などがある。

Musical characteristics and transformation

初期は“avant-hip-hop”や「ポストロックのヒップホップ版」と評されるような、断片的で抽象的、文学的とも評されるリリックと、サンプルやノイズ、アンビエンスを多用する実験志向が核だった。しかし2000年代中盤以降、個々のメンバーはインディロックやエレクトロニカ、ポップ寄りの編成へと歩みを移し、結果としてAnticonは「単一ジャンルのレーベル」ではなく、むしろ“共鳴する個人群”になっていった。代表格のWhy?（Yoni Wolf）はメロディ志向のソングライティングを深め、Doseoneらはパフォーマンス志向のプロジェクトに傾斜した。

逸話・転機

Soleの離脱（2010）：共同創設者のSoleは2010年にAnticonからの離脱を表明。ビジネス上の見解や方向性の違いが背景にあったとされるが、個人的な連携は継続するとコメントした。
Aliasの死去（2018）：共同創設者でプロデューサー／アーティストのAliasは2018年に急逝。以後レーベルは活動が縮小し、創設メンバーの1人であるSoleの言及によれば、Aliasの死後、レーベルは解消（dissolved）したとされる。これはAnticonの歴史における明確なターニングポイントである

Influence in production/guest performance

Anticonのメンバーは自分たちのレーベル外でも幅広くコラボレーションを行った。例えばOdd Nosdamのリミックス仕事やAliasのプロデュース／コラボは、ポストロックやインディ界隈のアーティストとも交差している。またAnticonは外部からBuck 65やSage Francisなどのリリースやツアーのハブにもなり、独自のシーン形成に寄与した。

現在の状態（2020年代）と遺産

There are reports that the official website and activities have shrunk since 2018, and that “continuation as a label” has virtually ceased with the death of founding member Alias. However, individual artists (Why?, Doseone, Odd Nosdam, etc.) continue to pursue solo careers or other labels, and Anticon’s musical influence remains strong in the indie/experimental music world to this day. The diaspora of the 2010s and the turning point of 2018 are good examples of how the “collective body” of a label changes as individuals become more diverse.

Decoration and deconstruction of words: Anticon style vocals often embellish words to shake up meaning and emotion. Lyric analysis (vocabulary frequency, theme changes) is also interesting from a cultural research perspective.

At the core of its activities is an awareness of the ““expansion of underground hip-hop” from the late 1990s to the 2000s, and as a result, Anticon has taken on a strong character as an ““art collective,” ““independent lab,” and ““ideological community.” cLOUDDEAD”s fantastic works, Why?”s pop-leaning albums, and the experimental production of Alias and Odd Nosdam continue to influence many listeners and musicians to this day.

Although the label effectively came to an end in the late 2010s with the passing of Alias and the scattering of members, its spirit continues to pulsate in the activities of each artist. Anticon’s genre-bending aesthetic has become one of the cornerstones of modern indie music and DIY culture, and has been passed down to a new generation of experimental artists on Spotify and Bandcamp.
