喜多郎は、1970年代初頭日本のプログレッシブ・ロックバンド「ファー・イースト・ファミリー・バンド」のメンバーとしてキーボードを担当。バンドのレコーディングに訪れたヨーロッパで、ドイツのシンセサイザー奏者クラウス・シュルツェに出会い、シンセサイザーに傾倒していく。
1976年にバンドを脱退し、アジア（中国、ラオス、タイ、インド）を旅したのち、1978年に喜多郎の初ソロ・アルバム「天界」をリリースした。
