喜多郎は、1970年代初頭日本のプログレッシブ・ロックバンド「ファー・イースト・ファミリー・バンド」のメンバーとしてキーボードを担当。バンドのレコーディングに訪れたヨーロッパで、ドイツのシンセサイザー奏者クラウス・シュルツェに出会い、シンセサイザーに傾倒していく。
After leaving the band in 1976 and traveling throughout Asia (China, Laos, Thailand, and India), Kitaro released his first solo album, ““Tenkai,’’ in 1978.
