Amapiano

Text: mmr|Theme: Interpreting Amapiano, which spread from a township in South Africa to the world, from the science of bass, rhythm, repetition, space, body, and digital culture

When many people hear Amapiano for the first time, they may think it’s slow.

If you think of it as house music, the tempo of around 110-120 BPM is by no means fast. In fact, from the perspective of general club music, it sounds like a fairly comfortable speed.

Amapiano has a sense of pushing his body forward even though it’s slow. Piano chords, shakers, light kicks, voices, and a huge bass log drum all move in different places, creating a single groove.

Here lies Amapiano’s biggest secret.

**The combination of space, bass, and repetition allows the body to keep predicting the rhythm. **

Amapiano was formed in the early 2010s out of the township culture of South Africa’s Gauteng province, particularly around Pretoria and Johannesburg. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact “birthplace” or single founder. Multiple producers and DJs, including MFR Souls, Kabza De Small, and Mdu aka TRP, shaped the sound at different stages.

From around 2019, it spread widely within South Africa, and in the 2020s, it crossed borders through streaming, SNS, and dance videos.

Why has this music been able to penetrate the body so much all over the world?

Amapiano’s sound itself has a structure that is compatible with human perception.

The secret of Amapiano is not that it has more sounds. The reason lies in the use of the space between the sounds as a groove.

Is Amapiano “piano music”?

Let’s start with the name.

The word Amapiano comes from the isiZulu word for “piano”.

The log drum referred to here is not literally an acoustic musical instrument made by hitting wooden logs.

It is an electronically created bass sound that functions as a pitched percussive bass.

This sound plays a very special role within Amapiano.

In normal dance music, the kick creates the rhythm, and the bass supports the low range.

Amapiano

Even though it’s low-pitched, it moves like a melody.

And create an accent like percussion.

These three roles overlap in one sound.

The bass doesn’t just come from below.

Why the “slowness” of 110 BPM level feels fast

Amapiano

Not all music feels the same, even at 110 BPM.

Shaker.

rim shot.

vocal.

log drum.

They don’t all hit exactly the same spot.

We don’t just listen to music as a series of sounds.

I listen to it while anticipating “what’s going to come next.”

Amapiano

Don’t insist on kicking.

Instead, shakers and percussion create the flow of time.

Then a log drum enters from an unexpected place.

Then the body waits for the next accent.

Through this repetition, music that is slow in terms of numbers becomes music that is constantly moving in the body.

Amapiano’s “speed” is not in BPM. It is in the structure that makes you wait for the next sound.

When listening to Amapiano, there are moments when it feels like there are fewer sounds.

With Amapiano, there is no need to fill every space with sound.

The listener’s body complements that.

In music, the time when no sound is playing becomes part of the rhythm.

For example, if you play a series of strong kicks, the beat will be clear.

Amapiano uses this move many times.

Therefore, while the listener predicts that he will step here, he actually moves his body in a slightly different position.

Behind this is multiple musical cultures such as South African house, kwaito, jazz, lounge, and Bacardi. Amapiano did not just mix them together, but created a new rhythmic space between different elements.

When talking about Amapiano”s sound, you can”t avoid log drums.

However, the important thing is not that ““a low tone is playing.’’

A normal bass line supports a chord progression or reinforces a kick.

This situation arises.

Mdu aka TRP credits the electronic use of log drums with playing an important role in the development of Amapiano. Kabza De Small himself speaks of Mdu as an important figure in the log drum sound.

This development of sound overlaps with the evolution of the genre itself.

Early Amapiano was notable for its piano and deep house elements.

A new way to use the bass has been added.

Then, even though the tempo was the same, the center of gravity of the music changed.

The piano floats above;

The percussion moves sideways,

A log drum bounces from below.

Amapiano’s basic acoustic structure

graph TD A["Piano / Keys"] --> D["Amapiano Groove"] B["Shakers / Percussion"] --> D C["Kick"] --> D E["Log Drum"] --> D F["Vocals / Chants"] --> D D --> G["Body Movement"] D --> H["Dancefloor Interaction"]

If it’s just piano, it also exists in jazz and house.

Shakers are also not uncommon.

But when they are combined within a specific tempo, space, rhythm, repetition, and bass structure, they create an Amapiano feel.

Amapiano

Amapiano’s origins cannot be drawn in one simple line.

Around Pretoria and Johannesburg, young DJs and producers were slowing down, processing, and adding new percussion to existing house music.

Bacardi House was also an important backdrop.

Kwaito is also linked to Amapiano as an important musical lineage in South African urban culture.

Elements of deep house, jazz, soul, and lounge overlapped there.

Rather, it was the result of multiple musical ideas gradually coming together at township parties, DJ culture, and home studios.

Recent research has also pointed out the difficulty of reducing the origins of Amapiano to a single city or person. It has also been documented that early practitioners such as MFR Souls were involved in shaping the sound known as “ama-piano” from the early 2010s.

Amapiano

Looking at this genealogy makes it easier to understand the characteristics of Amapiano.

Piano has memories of jazz and house.

The bass is connected to kwaito and the history of South African dance music.

Amapiano is not “music born from nothing.” This is music that repositions South Africa’s musical history in a different way.

2012-2016 - Music before it had a name

However, the current Amapiano was not completed at this point.

Rather, the boundaries as a genre were still vague.

Early acts such as MFR Souls were important in shaping the music that would later be recognized as Amapiano.

At that time, there were no clear genre classifications as there are today.

DJ slows down existing house music.

Emphasize the piano line.

Process the bass.

Then try it at a party.

A number of such experiments were conducted.

Amapiano in the 2010s did not begin as a complete “product”.

I grew up in a culture where DJs adjusted the sound while checking the reactions at clubs and townships.

The body’s reactions come back to production.

When people dance, the sound remains.

This feedback formed Amapiano’s groove.

The early history of Amapiano is not only the history of the songs, but also the history of the dancers selecting the music.

2017-2019 – Genre begins to take shape

From 2017 to 2019, Amapiano’s sound became more defined.

piano.

percussion.

bass.

Slow tempo.

And vocals.

Kabza De Small became one of the leading producers of this era.

And collaboration with DJ Maphorisa will push Amapiano to a wider market.

In 2019, the duo released Scorpion Kings, followed by The Return of the Scorpion Kings. These works played an important role in expanding Amapiano’s national recognition.

What happened here was more than just a hit.

“This sound is not a passing fad.”

The music that grew up in the underground DJ culture began to take off in a larger market.

Sound is segmented.

And a new substyle is born.

Private School。

Sgija.

Dust.

Quantum.

The moment a genre becomes successful, there is no longer just one genre.

2019 – The moment when underground music reached the nation

2019 was a major turning point for Amapiano.

Music that had previously been centered around the townships began to reach a wider South African audience.

It”s important to note that Amapiano wasn”t originally marketed to the world by a large record company.

DJ.

producer.

local party.

Digital distribution.

SNS.

Word of mouth.

These networks existed before.

Therefore, Amapiano was not music that flowed from the center to the regions.

It was music that rose from the countryside to the center.

Amapiano was already music that could travel among people without any formal promotion system.

Amapiano’s expansion into the world did not begin with the global market. It started as a result of local networks becoming strong enough.

2020 – The pandemic changed the way music travels

In 2020, the world’s music environment has changed significantly.

Clubs closed and live events were limited.

For dance music, this was a huge problem.

However, it was also a time when the digital space became even more important for Amapiano.

Streaming.

YouTube.

TikTok.

Instagram。

A short dance video.

DJ set.

These formats separated music from physical clubs.

According to Spotify, Amapiano reached the first 100 million streams on the platform in 2020, and by mid-2024, Amapiano’s work has reached 855 million streams. Spotify also reported a 153% increase in international exposure from 2014 to 2024.

It’s not just the numbers themselves that are important here.

The speed at which music moves has changed.

In the past, for dance music from one country to reach another, it would have to go through channels such as records, DJs, clubs, radio, and magazines.

However, in the streaming era, a single dance video can be played simultaneously all over the world.

Amapiano’s physical personality was a good fit for this environment.

In addition to listening to sounds,

“Dance to this song”

This is because the act itself has become content.

Amapiano didn’t move from the club to the Internet. The very physical experience that was happening in the club was brought to the internet.

Dance was part of the music, not promotion.

Given Amapiano’s global reach, dance is more than just a promotional tool.

Amapiano has body movements that match the log drum accents.

And the structure of the song invites dancing.

There’s bass.

The voice repeats.

The body reacts.

The reaction becomes a video.

The video will be posted to SNS.

Another person imitates.

Move to another area.

Amapiano’s digital diffusion structure

graph LR A["New Track"] --> B["Dance / Club"] B --> C["Video"] C --> D["Social Media"] D --> E["New Audience"] E --> F["New Dance"] F --> D E --> G["Streaming"] G --> H["Global Exposure"] H --> B

In normal music promotion,

Work → Promotion → Listener

It tends to flow in one direction.

For Amapiano,

Work → Dance → Video → Reinterpretation → New dance → Work

A cycle occurs.

That”s why it”s not just the song that spreads, but the way you use your body as well.

GRAMMY points out the importance of SNS and streaming in Amapiano’s international expansion, reporting that #Amapiano on TikTok has garnered over 10 billion views as of 2024.

At Amapiano, dance is not an advertisement for music. Dance itself becomes a form of music distribution.

Why does the brain hate repetition?

Amapiano

Same log drum.

But why isn’t it boring?

In human musical perception, repetition is not simple copying.

When the same pattern is repeated, the brain learns the pattern.

Be able to predict what will come next.

As a result, a ““reassuring structure’’ is created within the music.

But Amapiano doesn’t stop at complete repetition.

There are subtle changes.

The percussion changes a little.

The accent of the log drum changes.

Voice added.

The code changes.

Sound goes out.

And back again.

This ““change through repetition’’ is important.

It would be boring if it was completely predictable.

If it is not completely predictable, it will be confusing.

The state in between keeps the groove going.

Amapiano stays in the middle for a long time.

So even if the song is long, the listener can stay immersed in it.

When you listen to Amapiano at high volume, the first thing that hits you is the bass.

In a loud environment like a club, the bass shakes the space itself.

Amapiano’s log drum uses this physical bass as a very important element.

However, the important thing is not that “lower is better.”

Therefore, while the body feels the vibrations, it can also recognize changes in pitch at the same time.

This is a very special situation.

Even though it’s a low tone, it moves as a melody.

Even though it is a rhythm, there is a pitch.

Although it is percussion, it has a bass role.

This versatility strengthens Amapiano’s physicality.

Role of log drum

graph TD A["Log Drum"] --> B["Low Frequency Energy"] A --> C["Rhythmic Accent"] A --> D["Pitch Movement"] B --> E["Physical Sensation"] C --> F["Groove"] D --> G["Melodic Perception"] E --> H["Dance Response"] F --> H G --> H

Amapiano’s bass is not a “sound supported from below.” It is a sound that directly connects the body and rhythm.

“Weak kick” but strong groove

If you compare Amapiano to other house music, you may find that the way kicks are handled is distinctive.

Of course, there are differences depending on the work.

However, with Amapiano, there is no need to emphasize only the kick to establish a rhythm.

Percussion marks the time,

A log drum creates an accent.

This is very important when producing music.

Distribute the roles to multiple sounds.

Then, the music as a whole becomes more relaxed.

Amapiano is not music with a weak kick. This is music that does not leave the rhythm solely to the kick.

If the log drum moves the body, the piano and keyboard support Amapiano’s emotional side.

Harmonies reminiscent of soul music.

A long pad.

Soft synth.

These soften the physical intensity of the bass.

Here lies Amapiano’s unique balance.

Bass bounces below.

The code floats above.

Percussion moves in the center.

A voice passes through them.

Amapiano

graph TD A["High"] --> B["Vocals / Shakers / Hats"] B --> C["Piano / Keys / Pads"] C --> D["Kick / Percussion"] D --> E["Log Drum / Sub Bass"] E --> F["Physical Impact"]

From bass to treble, each region has a different role.

Therefore, even if the number of sounds is small, it sounds three-dimensional.

Another Amapiano called “Private School”

Amapiano is not a monolith.

Among them, the style called ““Private School’’ has strong elements of melody, jazz, and deep house.

He is often associated with Kabza De Small and Josiah De Disciple.

On the other hand, there are also more percussive and harsh sounds.

DJ Mag has introduced that there are multiple directions within Amapiano, including Private School, Sgija, and Dust.

This is important in understanding Amapiano’s strength.

If a genre relies on only one tone, it will be consumed the moment it enters the global market.

But Amapiano had multiple directions internally.

soft.

Jazzy.

heavy.

dark.

Percussive.

Mainly vocals.

Mainly instrumental.

Each reaches a different listener.

2021-2022 - The world discovers Amapiano

By the early 2020s, Amapiano was quickly gaining recognition outside of South Africa.

Focalistic’s ““Ke Star’’ became one of the works that symbolized its international expansion.

She gained international attention with her style that combines dance and performance as a DJ.

As a result, Amapiano becomes recognized not just as ““South Africa’s new house’’ but as a distinct cultural style.

It was new to the world.

However, it was not music that suddenly appeared locally.

A global break is not the moment when music was born. This is the moment when the outside world becomes aware of its existence.

Tyla and “Amapiano” pop

In the process of Amapiano entering the global market, it was important not only to focus on pure club music, but also to integrate pop, R&B and Afropop.

Tyla is a symbol of that.

“Water” combined elements of Amapiano with pop and R&B and became a worldwide hit.

At the 2024 GRAMMY Awards, Tyla won Best African Music Performance for “Water.” GRAMMY records this as the first award in this category.

What”s happening here isn”t an export of a genre.

It’s a genre translation.

Rather than taking Amapiano itself to the world as is, we transform it into a format that pop listeners around the world can understand.

However, Amapiano’s physicality remains within it.

rhythm.

base.

and the cultural background of South Africa.

Globalization is not just about diluting culture. It is to connect with the grammar of another culture.

Is Amapiano Afrobeats?

In the global market, Amapiano and Afrobeats are often talked about together.

But both are not the same thing.

Artists create works across genres.

Producers incorporate rhythms from different regions.

Streaming playlists arrange different music in the same place.

That”s why in today”s pop music, the boundaries between genres are blurred more than ever before.

Contemporary African Dance Music Connection

graph LR A["South African House"] --> B["Amapiano"] C["Kwaito"] --> B D["Bacardi"] --> B E["Afrobeats"] --> F["Global Pop"] B --> F B --> G["Club Music"] F --> H["New Hybrid Sounds"] G --> H

What’s interesting about Amapiano is that rather than disappearing due to globalization, it has become a connection point with other music.

Amapiano’s production environment also changed the sound

The history of Amapiano is also related to the issue of the production environment.

Young producers in the 2010s didn’t necessarily have large studios.

computer.

software.

sample.

Plugin.

And my home production environment.

Music was created in this environment.

Recent research has also argued that digital production environments such as FruityLoops, Cubase, and Reason were involved in the formation of Amapiano.

Gone are the days when only people with expensive equipment were able to create sound.

As a result, young producers outside the traditional music industry can now create and publish their work.

The work is then returned to the scene through a DJ.

The reactions from the scene are reflected in the production once again.

Amapiano production cycle

graph LR A["Home Studio"] --> B["Producer"] B --> C["Track"] C --> D["DJ / Party"] D --> E["Audience Response"] E --> B C --> F["Digital Sharing"] F --> G["New Audience"] G --> D

This cycle increased the rate of evolution of Amapiano.

Amapiano”s sound wasn”t just created in the studio. It was created by going back and forth between the studio and the dance floor many times.

It”s easy to think of Amapiano”s repeatability as “simple.”

But iteration requires sophisticated design.

If you just repeat the same pattern over and over again, you’ll get bored quickly.

Add percussion.

Change the log drum.

Add your voice.

Change the code.

And then go back again.

This is a practice found throughout club music, but at Amapiano, the changes are relatively slow.

So the listener can recognize the change.

Even if the music doesn’t develop rapidly, something is always changing inside.

This feeling supports Amapiano’s long grooves.

Repetition does not mean less information. The idea is to repeat the same structure so that you can find changes.

When talking about Amapiano’s tempo, “slow” is not enough.

Rather, it is easier to understand if you think of it as ““walking speed.’’

Fast dance music gives your body a lot of accents in a short amount of time.

Amapiano

Each accent has its own time.

So the body can react to each beat.

In a fast rhythm, the body keeps track of minute timing.

shoulder.

Waist.

足。

Upper body.

arm.

Each can move separately.

Many artists went international, including Major League DJz, Uncle Waffles, DBN Gogo, Focalistic, Kabza De Small, and DJ Maphorisa.

Tokyo.

London.

new york.

Clubs around the world.

The fact that Amapiano began to be performed in this context shows that it has become established as an international genre. GRAMMY introduces that as of 2024, Amapiano will be playing at festivals in Tokyo, New York, and Europe.

However, one important issue arises here.

Amapiano

“What is Amapiano?”

The question becomes difficult.

When music crosses borders, localization always occurs.

A producer from another country makes Amapiano.

Sing in another language.

Mix different rhythms.

Make another dance.

This results in a different sound from the original Amapiano.

If you look at the history of music, genres have always moved and changed.

So was House.

So was techno.

So was hip-hop.

Therefore, there is no need to think about the future of Amapiano only in terms of ““protecting pure Amapiano.’’

The important thing is to understand where the sounds come from and see what emerges in the new culture.

Globalization is not the end of genres. This is the moment when a genre begins to take on new meaning elsewhere.

Amapiano’s history is one of moving from local experimentation in the early 2010s to global music culture in the 2020s.

Looking at this flow, we can see that there were three major stages in Amapiano’s evolution.

The first was a local experiment.

Next, establish it as a genre.

and internationalization through digital networks.

With these three stages connected, Amapiano moved into the world.

Listen to Amapiano as “science”

So let’s go back to the first question.

Why does Amapiano move his body so much?

There is more than one answer.

It has a tempo.

There is repetition.

There is a prediction.

There is an accent that slightly contradicts that prediction.

There is bass.

There is space.

There is space for the body to move.

And the dance is tied to the very structure of the music.

These are working at the same time.

Amapiano’s Perceptual Model

This cycle is important.

Listen to the sound.

Predict.

My body moves.

Share with others.

This shared physical sensation expands the music.

So Amapiano is not just a recording.

It is also a physical culture.

To understand Amapiano, you need to look not just at the ears, but also at how the ears move the body.

Amapiano’s true innovation is not “tone”

The log drum is a symbol of Amapiano.

But it”s not enough to explain Amapiano”s innovation in terms of log drums alone.

The log drum itself did not invent Amapiano.

Piano is also not new.

Shakers aren’t new either.

Houses aren’t new either.

Kwaito isn’t new either.

What was new was the way they were combined.

And that combination worked within a particular physical culture.

Here lies Amapiano’s true innovation.

In the history of music, innovation does not necessarily mean creating sounds that no one has ever heard before.

Innovation can also occur by placing existing sounds in a different relationship.

Amapiano

New music is not necessarily born from new sounds. Sometimes it is created by changing the positional relationship of old sounds.

Why Amapiano was strong in the world

There is no single reason why Amapiano spread around the world.

However, several conditions overlapped.

First, it had a unique acoustic signature.

log drum.

piano.

percussion.

Slow tempo.

Secondly, it was very compatible with dance.

Fourth, there was a variety of styles inside.

Fifth, I was able to connect with other genres such as pop, Afropop, and R&B.

Above all, Amapiano already had a strong cultural base within South Africa.

When it went out into the world, it wasn’t an empty “new product.”

It was music with a long local history.

Global hits appear suddenly. However, the culture that supports this music does not suddenly emerge.

Is it the “last new global genre”?

Is Amapiano the last new global genre?

Of course, we cannot say for sure.

Music will continue to create new genres.

However, the arrival of Amapiano symbolizes a change in the times.

In the past, for a new genre to spread around the world, large-scale networks such as record companies, radio, magazines, clubs, and television were needed.

Music born in a small area,

recorded with a smartphone,

Shared on SNS,

It becomes a dance video,

streamed,

Reinterpreted by producers around the world.

Amapiano has become a symbol of this new distribution model.

So what’s important is not the term “last genre” itself.

What matters is that the very way global genres are created has changed.

Amapiano is not the last new genre. After Amapiano, the way new genres reached the world changed.

Amapiano’s secret lies in the “human body”

If you were to explain Amapiano using only music theory, the words piano, log drum, percussion, and BPM would line up.

In terms of acoustics, it’s low frequencies, rhythm, repetition, and syncopation.

If we were to describe digital culture, it would be TikTok, streaming, video, and algorithms.

If you explain it in terms of cultural history, you’ll find Gauteng, township, kwaito, house, Bacardi, jazz, etc.

However, there is a place that connects them all.

It’s the body.

The body reacts.

people dance

The dance becomes a video.

Images travel around the world.

Someone elsewhere sees the movement and hears the same music.

And dance again.

What comes next for Amapiano

How Amapiano will change from now on is yet to be determined.

Multiple substyles already exist within South Africa.

Around the world, fusion with pop, club music, hip-hop, R&B, Afrobeats, etc. from various regions continues.

In other words, Amapiano is not a completed genre.

In fact, the rate of change is accelerating as it spreads around the world.

This is both a danger and a strength for the genre.

Globalization can lead to separation from one’s original culture.

On the other hand, the possibility of creating new music also increases.

I don’t know what the future Amapiano will sound like.

Amapiano wasn’t music that stayed in one place.

Amapiano’s history is not a history of completion. This is the history of music that has acquired a structure that allows it to continue to change.

The Secret Science of Amapiano

and South African township culture.

These created a cycle.

Amapiano is not simply a “new genre”.

And when listening to Amapiano, the most important thing is not only to analyze the tone of the log drum.

In the history of music, each time a new genre is born, the question ““what’s new?’’ is asked.

In Amapiano’s case, the answer is a little surprising.

It’s not like a completely new sound was born.

No new instruments were invented.

Nor is it just new codes being invented.

Existing sounds were connected in new relationships.

Extended by DJ,

reconstructed by the producer,

carried around the world by smartphones.

Therefore, the true “science” of Amapiano does not exist only in music theory.

sound and body.

body and dance.

dance and film.

Video and Network.

Networks and Culture.

It’s all connected.

The reason Amapiano moved the world was not because it was music made for the world. First of all, it was music that truly moved the human body in one place.

10 points for listening to Amapiano

1. Don’t just listen to BPM

Listen to the relationship between kick and percussion.

2. Find the location of the log drum

Follow where the bass comes in.

3. Listen to the piano alone

Don’t just follow the bass, listen to the chords and melodies playing above.

4. Find the moment when the sound leaves

With Amapiano, grooves are created not only by the addition of sounds, but also by the disappearance of sounds.

5. Listen to Shaker

If you follow the detailed percussion, you can see the inner movement of the song.

6. Listen to your voice as a rhythm

Vocals can function not only as lyrics but also as part of the rhythm.

7. Don’t rush through long intros.

The time it takes for a groove to form is itself an important part of Amapiano.

It becomes easier to understand how music connects to the body.

9. Be aware of South Africa’s music history

When you learn about the genealogy of kwaito, house, Bacardi, jazz, etc., the meaning of the sounds changes.

10. Stop analyzing at the end

Amapiano is music that can be analyzed, but analysis alone is not enough. The last thing you need to do is listen with your body.

The core of Amapiano

If you were to describe Amapiano in one word,

“Dance music born from South African township culture that evolved around space, bass, and physicality”

That’s what it means.

But that’s not enough.

The real fun of Amapiano lies in the process by which its music spreads throughout the modern world.

local culture.

DJ culture.

Streaming.

SNS.

dance.

These are connected in one piece of music.

As a result, Amapiano has become more than just a genre name.

And most importantly, Amapiano didn’t create a “new sound.”

**This is a redesign of the way humans perceive rhythm using a new combination. **

That may be the true secret behind this music.

Amapiano begins with the ear and is completed with the body. Therein lies the secret of the music that moved the world.
