“Lego blocks with infinite sound”
Text: mmr|Theme: Changes in the Eurorack modular synthesizer and its influence on the music scene
The Eurorack modular synthesizer was invented by German engineer Dieter Doepfer in the early 1990s.Starting from his A-100 system, by standardizing module sizes and power supply standards, a system was born that allowed modules from different manufacturers to be freely combined.
Smaller and more affordable than the traditional Moog and Bucla, Eurorack has gained the support of many musicians and enthusiasts, and has now developed into a large ecosystem with over 300 manufacturers participating around the world.

Features: Utilizes digital synthesis to provide modules with sharp tones and high sound pressure.Especially suitable for extreme sound creation.
Influence on music genre/scene
Eurorack modular synthesizers have had a huge influence on certain musical genres and scenes.
Experimental/Ambient
Artists like Alessandro Cortini and Keith Fullerton Whitman use Eurorack to create complex and profound sonic worlds.
Techno/IDM
Many artists use Eurorack for live performances and studio production, creating improvisational and dynamic sounds.
Pop/Rock
Bands like Coldplay and Nine Inch Nails have also embraced Eurorack, adding new tones to their songwriting and live performances.
Usage examples for users and artists
Below are some of the notable artists and their signature modules that utilize Eurorack modular synthesizers.
| Artist name | Example of module used |
|---|---|
| Alessandro Cortini | Make Noise MATHS, Mutable Instruments Rings |
| Keith Fullerton Whitman | Intellijel Plonk, Mutable Instruments Clouds |
| Aphex Twin | Make Noise Erbe-Verb, Mutable Instruments Braids |
| Coldplay | Make Noise Shared System, Intellijel Metropolis |
| Nine Inch Nails | Make Noise MATHS, Mutable Instruments Clouds |
| Surgeon | Mutable Instruments Braids, Make Noise MATHS, Hexinverter Mutant Hi Hats, Tiptop Audio Trigger Riot |
Features of Surgeon’s Live Setup
Surgeon’s live setup is characterized by the pursuit of maximum expression with minimal equipment. He performs improvisationally using a limited number of modules rather than a complex combination of equipment. This creates a sense of unity with the audience and unpredictability, bringing a new dimension to live techno performances.
